(1) MSM censors Luc Montagnier claim to have found HIV embedded in Covid-19

by Peter Myers, April 25, 2020

Luc Montagnier, who won the Nobel Prize in Medicine for discovering the
HIV virus, claimed to have found sequences of HIV embedded in Covid-19.

He said that this indicated that Covid-19 was genetically engineered:
"in order to insert an HIV sequence into this genome, molecular tools
are needed, and that can only be done in a laboratory".

He appeared on TV in France, where the Government, and other
virologists, rubbished him. He was branded a "conspiracy theorist", and
"fake news".

The English-language media could hardly have been unaware of the
controversy. The Times of London, and alternative sites like Zero Hedge,
ran the story, but the MSM in the USA blacked it out.

I ran a number of Google searches to examine whether individual news
sites had covered the story.

In a Google search, if you click on 'Tools', you can set a timeframe.

Montagnier's statements were first published about April 16, 2020.

I did searches on April 18, but today, April 25, I did more extensive
searches, specifing as a timeframe "past month".

Each search specified one site, being a news agency, mainly MSM but also
some 'alternative' sites.

The search string I put to Google was (e.g.)

NB: there is no SPACE between 'site:' and the URL of the website. If you
put a space, you will get wrong results.

US Blame Game Twist: Suing China for COVID-19 Outbreaks
By Stephen Lendman
Global Research, April 19, 2020
"No evidence suggests that COVID-19 originated in a Chinese lab or from
bat-eating Chinese people. [...] Researcher Larry Romanoff explained
that "Japanese and Taiwanese epidemiologists and pharmacologists have
determined that the new coronavirus (COVID-19) almost certainly
originated in the US." [...]
Falsely blaming China for its origination is all about the Trump regime
shifting blame for its own wrongdoing and failings onto others. French
virologist/Nobel laureate for Medicine Luc Montagnier said COVID-19 was
man-made, not transmitted to humans from bats or other wildlife. In
April, a peer-reviewed study published in the Antiviral Research medical
journal revealed unique COVID-19 features that facilitate human-to-human
transmission — making the novel coronavirus much more contagious than
seasonal flu/influenza. The study also found no evidence that COVID-19
evolved naturally. Its genetic coding isn’t natural. Most likely it was
engineered with elements from MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome) —
first reported in 2012, according to the study. Genomics researcher
James Lyons-Weiler explained that "(t)here is no doubt that there is a
novel sequence in 2019-nCoV" —the virus causing COVID-19 disease,
adding: "IPAK researchers found a sequence similarity between a
pShuttle-SN recombination vector sequence and INS1378," indicating human
engineering. [...]

"While France may have denounced the claims made by Luc Montagnier,
virologist, and winner of the 2008 Nobel Prize for Medicine for his work
on HIV, the French citizens distrustful of the government actually do
believe that SARS-CoV-2, the putative cause of COVID-19, is a
laboratory-manipulated virus.
"Professor Luc Montagnier in a TV interview said that the SARS-CoV-2 is
a manipulated virus that was accidentally released from the Wuhan
laboratory, where the Chinese researchers used coronaviruses in their
work to develop an AIDS vaccine. HIV RNA fragments are believed to have
been found in the SARS-CoV-2 genome, Professor Luc claimed.
"His statement has disturbed not only the French government but also
many in the scientific community.
"The French discussion boards which long have been debating over the
link between the Wuhan lab and the government of France, however, find
the Nobel-winning scientist's claim valid. [...]

"Science Was coronavirus made in a lab? Claim met with skepticism
"French Nobel laureate adds fuel to fire in Wuhan origin debate
KIYOSHI ANDO, Nikkei senior staff writer April 25, 2020 05:11
TOKYO -- "One of the Nobel laureates responsible for discovering HIV has
turned heads with a recent claim that the novel coronavirus was created
by scientists, possibly in the process of seeking an AIDS vaccine.
"While support for Luc Montagnier's view is almost nonexistent in the
scientific community, its existence underscores how little the world
knows about the pathogen behind the global pandemic.
"The French virologist's assertion added to the charged debate over the
origin of the virus, with U.S. officials suggesting that it had escaped
from a laboratory in Wuhan, the Chinese city where the first cases appeared.
"In an interview last week, the French virologist cited a paper by
mathematician Jean-Claude Perez, in which Montagnier himself is thanked
in the acknowledgments.
"The paper purports to show that within a narrow section of the genome
of the new coronavirus, six fragments of genetic information from HIV
were found. The presence of HIV-related elements in such a small
fraction -- less than 1% -- of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes
COVID-19, suggests that these could not have been inserted naturally,
Perez and Montagnier argue. The virus must have been artificially
engineered, they say.
"Leading French newspapers and magazines, including Le Monde and Le
Figaro, reported Montagnier's comments. But other scientists are
skeptical. Unlike the strict screening put in place for prestigious
academic journals, Perez's paper was published on a site that does not
require prior peer review.
"Researchers from France's Institut Pasteur and the National Center for
Scientific Research have rejected the view that the virus is man-made,
arguing that exchanging of information among viruses occurs frequently
in nature.
"The skepticism is not confined to France. [...]

(2) Conclusion: There must be a central council, which decides which
news can be published

by Peter Myers, April 25, 2020

The French-language media reported the issue.

The MSM in the USA blacked the story out entirely.

The MSM in Britain mostly blacked it out, except for the London Times.
The BBC mentioned the issue, but fact-checked Montagnier away without
quoting his own words, or providing any link where his case was put.

Major media in Asia did mention the story, some taking a neutral line,
some siding with Montagnier, some against.

Alternative media in some cases covered the story, in other cases
blacked it out.

If Montagnier were a nobody. the above would not matter. But as the
discoverer of HIV, winner of the Nobel Prize, his statements should at
least be reported. That they were not reported by the MSM, in particular
the Globalist media, shows that the Ministry of Truth is in full force.

There must be a central council somewhere, which decides which news can
be published, and which not. It would also maintain a Nomenklatura of
reliable authors, and a Blacklist of those to be censored.

The Bats Behind the Pandemic - Matt Ridley

The Bats Behind the Pandemic

From Ebola to Covid-19, many of the deadliest viruses to emerge in
recent years have the same animal source.

By Matt Ridley

Wall Street Journal

April 9, 2020 10:02 am ET

From Ebola to Covid-19, many of the deadliest viruses to emerge in
recent years have the same animal source.

RaTG13 is the name, rank and serial number of an individual horseshoe
bat of the species Rhinolophus affinis, or rather of a sample of its
feces collected in 2013 in a cave in Yunnan, China. The sample was
collected by hazmat-clad scientists from the Institute of Virology in
Wuhan that year. Stored away and forgotten until January this year, the
sample from the horseshoe bat contains the virus that causes Covid-19.

{He provides no evidence; Shi Zhengli said that none of Wuhan P4 lab's
samples match Covid-19 - Peter M.}

The scientists were mostly sampling a very similar species with slightly
shorter wings, called Rhinolophus sinicus, in a successful search for
the origin of the virus responsible for the SARS epidemic of 2002-03.
That search had alarming implications, which were largely ignored.

In Shitou Cave, south of Kunming, the capital of Yunnan, they found
viruses in the bats' droppings and anal swabs that were more similar to
human SARS than anything found in palm civets, the small mammals that
until then were presumed to be the source of human infection. Back in
the laboratory, they found that one of the viruses from bat droppings,
called WIV1, could thrive in monkey and human cells specially engineered
to activate the gene for ACE2 receptors, the lock to which a
coronavirus's spike protein can fit as a key. This suggested that people
could catch SARS directly from a bat dropping.

Then in 2016, Ralph Baric and colleagues at the University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill showed that the same bat virus could infect live
mice that had been engineered to express the human gene for the ACE2
receptor. The virus was "poised for human emergence," as the title of
Dr. Baric's paper put it.

{He fails to note that Baric, Shi Zhengli and other participants engaged
in Gain of Function, helping to bring about the very virus they warned
about. - Peter M.}

When Covid-19 broke out, attention focused on pangolins, mammals often
called scaly anteaters. Early analyses of the pangolin version of the
virus seemed to indicate it was even more closely related to the human
version than the RaTG13 bat sample was. The illegal pangolin trade for
traditional Chinese medicine brings people into contact with sick
animals. Just over a year ago, 21 live Malayan pangolins destined for
sale in China were intercepted by anti-smuggling officers in Guangdong.
Despite the best efforts of a local wildlife rescue center, 16 died with
swollen, flooded lungs, rich in coronaviruses.

The role of pangolins in the spread of Sars-CoV-2, the virus that causes
Covid-19, remains unclear. A closer look at more of the Sars-CoV-2
genome, published last week by Maciej Boni at Penn State University and
David Robertson at Glasgow University, together with Chinese and
European colleagues, finds that human versions of the virus are more
closely related to the RaTG13 horseshoe bat sample from the cave than
they are to the known pangolin versions. It is not yet possible to tell
whether the virus went from bat to pangolin to people, or from bat to
pangolin and bat to people in parallel.

Significantly, the same analysis shows that the most recent common
ancestor of the human virus and the RaTG13 virus lived at least 40 years
ago. So it is unlikely that the cave in Yunnan (a thousand miles from
Wuhan) is where the first infection happened or that the culprit bat was
taken from that cave to Wuhan to be eaten or experimented on.

Rather, it is probable that somewhere much closer to Wuhan, there is
another colony of bats carrying the same kind of virus. Unless other
evidence emerges, it thus looks like a horrible coincidence that China's
Institute of Virology, a high-security laboratory where human cells were
being experimentally infected with bat viruses, happens to be in Wuhan,
the origin of today's pandemic. (At the time of the opening, critics did
raise the fact that Sars had escaped from high-level containment
facilities in Beijing.)

Bats are sold in markets and supplied directly to restaurants throughout
China and southeast Asia, but no direct evidence of their sale in
Wuhan's wet market has come to light. Also, horseshoe bats, which are
much smaller than the tastier fruit bats, are generally not among the
species eaten. The significance of the Yunnan cave sample is that it
shows the bat virus didn't need to recombine with viruses in other
species in a market to be infectious to people. The role of the wet
markets may be that other animals get infected there and produce much
higher loads of virus than the bats would, amplifying the infection.

All over Asia and Africa human beings encounter horseshoe bats, any one
of which could be carrying a virus that could start an epidemic if
amplified in a market or similar setting. Bats have supplied most of the
dangerous new diseases of the past two decades. The natural reservoir of
rabies is in bats, especially in the Americas. Ebola, Marburg and other
highly dangerous viruses come from bats, mainly in Africa. The Hendra
and Nipah viruses are caught from fruit bats and have caused lethal but
small outbreaks in south Asia and Australia. And most coronaviruses seem
to originate in bats, including SARS and MERS, a frequently fatal
illness that people in the Middle East began catching from camels in
2012, the camels having picked it up from bats.

There are good reasons why bats spread so many viruses. Bats are
long-lived mammals, like us, and live in large crowds, like us—ideal for
spreading respiratory infections in particular. One bat roost in Texas
houses 20 million bats at certain times of year, a concentration of
mammals paralleled only by people in cities. There are lots of different
species—one-quarter of all mammal species are bats—so they have lots of
different viruses. And they fly, carrying diseases long distances,
allowing viruses to indulge in "host-shifting" between bat species. This
especially suits viruses that can "recombine" with related strains, like
coronaviruses.

It is not yet clear why horseshoe bats, in particular, are so infested
with coronaviruses. These are average-size bats, distinguished by large,
pointed ears and weird little sonar dishes known as nose-leafs, the
outer part of which are often shaped like horseshoes. There are at least
100 species, many of which look very alike. Absent from the Americas,
they are found all over the tropics of the Old World and in some warm
temperate regions. They seem to be fond of living in caves and gathering
in large aggregations.

In a paper published in February last year, Patrick Woo and colleagues
at Hong Kong University surveyed the coronaviruses found in bats and
came to a prescient conclusion: "Bat–animal and bat–human interactions,
such as the presence of live bats in wildlife wet markets and
restaurants in Southern China, are important for interspecies
transmission of [coronaviruses] and may lead to devastating global
outbreaks."

We had fair warning with Ebola, Hendra, Nipah, MERS and SARS, and the
Yunnan cave discovery in 2013 should have sounded a loud alarm. Even
when this pandemic is over, others are possible. Bats live for up to 30
years and don't seem to suffer much in the way of symptoms from
coronaviruses, so bat number RaTG13 may well still be alive.

Debunking 9 popular myths doing the rounds in Africa about the coronavirus

April 13, 2020 5.40pm AEST

Apr 13 2020 (IPS) - In the second week of March the World Health
Organisation (WHO) declared COVID-19 a pandemic. By mid-March the
disease had spread rapidly in many countries around the world.

Governments are taking drastic steps, including the complete lockdown of
cities, as well as extensive health interventions to try and stem the
disease which is caused by a new coronavirus called SARS-CoV-2.

There is still a great deal that's not known about SARS-CoV-2. This
limited scientific information has contributed to a slew of myths and
misconceptions. Some claims being made are harmless. Others can be
potentially dangerous.

We have identified nine misconceptions doing the rounds on social media
in Africa and set out to counter them. The purpose of debunking these
myths is to provide people with trusted information. And to provide
people with valid scientifically backed answers which they can share on
social media to counter the misinformation and disinformation out there.
[...]

Myth 6: Steam your face with and inhale neem tree leaves

There have been claims, mostly in Ghana, that steam therapy with neem
can prevent COVID-19. What we know is that according to ayurvedic
medicine experts, neem can assist in strengthening the immune system and
prevent viral infections.

Neem is known to exhibit immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory,
antihyperglycaemic, anti-oxidant and anticarcinogenic properties. But,
the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention has emphasised that there
is no clinical evidence to suggest that steaming and inhaling with neem
will prevent coronavirus.

Myth 7: Vitamin C tablets prevent COVID-19

Vitamin C is a known anti-oxidant. It prevents damage to tissue in the
body by neutralising free radicals, which are charged particles that
cause damage to cells and tissues and result in inflammation. Vitamin C
is also known to protect against pathogens.

But there is no proof that vitamin C can prevent one from contracting
COVID-19 though there are trials being undertaken on the use of vitamin
C among COVID-19 patient. None has provided conclusive proof. [...]

(5) False claim: Steam therapy kills coronavirus - Reuters Fact Check,

Reuters Fact Check

MARCH 31, 2020 / 1:50 AM / A MONTH AGO

False claim: Steam therapy kills coronavirus

Users have been sharing content online that claims steam therapy kills
the coronavirus. Examples can be found here and here .

Some variations of this claim add other ingredients to the boiling water
or steam, such as orange or lemon ( here ) and peppermint oil ( here ).
Another post explains: "This technique will kill the Rona in your nasal
passage and throat. Add essential oils or slices of the following for
added benefits. Garlic, ginger, cayenne, tea tree, eucalyptus, or neem.
There are many others you can add. Do a google search for "antiviral
herbs foods" to see if anything you already have in your kitchen will
work."?( here )

These claims advise people to boil water, sometimes with other
ingredients, then place their face over the steam and inhale in order to
kill or eliminate the coronavirus. Some posts advise the user to do this
for 15 minutes or however long they can stand.

One post claims: "Steam heat treatment for respiratory viruses. A
natural remedy that kills Coronavirus, Influenza, Rhinovirus." ( here )

Neither the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) nor
the World Health Organization (WHO) suggest steam therapy with any
ingredient as a cure for the coronavirus. A representative from the CDC
told Reuters that he was not aware of any scientific studies that show
steam therapy helps with the coronavirus.

Steam therapy can help thin mucus as a supplemental course of action to
give some relief when grappling a cold or flu ( here ) but overall,
scientific studies showing evidence of its usefulness are lacking ( here ).

Additionally, the practice brings risks.

A study published by the Spanish Pediatrics Association notes: "It is
apparent that regardless of how SIT [Steam Inhalation Therapy] is
applied it carries a risk of burn injury. The usual technique of
covering the head with a towel over a pan filled with hot water is
dangerous due to the steam, the hot liquid, or even potential contact
with the container.?" ( here )

The American Burn Association explains, "Hot water will burn skin at
temperatures much lower than boiling point (212°F/100°C). In fact, it
only takes 3 seconds of exposure to?140°F/60°C water to cause a burn
serious enough to require surgery!" ( here )

These posts claim that inhalation of steam from boiling water, sometimes
with various infused ingredients, will kill the coronavirus. This is
false. While it may help ease symptoms like congestion, steam inhalation
also carries the risks of burns.

VERDICT False: Steam therapy will not kill the coronavirus

(9) Facebook's 'Fact Checkers' Are the Real Fake News

Facebook's 'fact checkers' are the real fake news after censoring Post story

By Post Editorial Board April 17, 2020 | 5:56pm | Updated

Way back on Feb. 23, The Post ran an opinion piece by Steven Mosher
saying that we couldn't trust China's story about the origins of
COVID-19. He argued that the virus might — might — have jumped to the
human population thanks to errors at a Chinese laboratory in Wuhan,
rather than via that city's now-notorious "wet market."

The piece was widely read online — until Facebook stepped in.

The social media giant's "fact checkers" decided this was not a valid
opinion. If you tried to share Mosher's column on Facebook, the social
network stuck a "False Information" alert on top, saying that finding
was "checked by independent fact-checkers" and preventing your friends
from clicking to connect to the original article to see for themselves.

Again, this was an opinion column, not a news report.

Mosher cited a host of suggestive facts, including urgent government
directives, the sudden trip of China's top biowar expert to Wuhan and
that nation's shoddy record of lab safety — as well as gaping holes in
the wet-market explanation, such as the fact that the market in question
doesn't sell bats, the animal from which the bug supposedly jumped.

How, exactly, did Facebook determine that Mosher's reasoned arguments
constituted "False information"? Well, in fact, it didn't so determine:
Rather, it was an "independent fact-checker."

And who did this fact checker rely on for their opinion? As reporter
Sharyl Attkisson notes, one expert consulted had a clear conflict of
interest: She has regularly worked with Wuhan's researchers, and even
done her own experiments there. Danielle E. Anderson, assistant
professor, Duke-NUS Medical School in Singapore, personally attested to
the lab's "strict control and containment measures."

Anderson did admit, however, that Mosher was correct when he mentioned
that SARS did twice escape a Beijing research lab in 2004.

The other expert who weighed in noted in her objection: "Any responsible
government would strengthen safety and security procedures in
high-containment labs that will and should be working with the novel
coronavirus to develop countermeasures and diagnostics."

Well, yes, any responsible government would.

Because these medical researchers took offense that someone would
question the Wuhan lab's protocols, Facebook decided you weren't allowed
to speculate online.

Nearly two months later, of course, Mosher isn't alone in his opinion.

This week brought hard news in the form of State Department cables from
January 2018 showing that the US government had longstanding, grave
concerns about safety protocols at the Wuhan lab — China's only Level 4
biohazard laboratory.

And multiple outlets, including Fox News and The Washington Post, report
that top US national-security officials are increasingly of the belief
that the bug came from that lab.

The New York Post has asked for weeks to get Facebook to un-block the
Mosher article. On Friday, the social network finally did so, though
without acknowledging that it had been wrong all along.

As a significant source of news for much of the world's population,
Facebook has a clear responsibility to do better: If it's going to block
"false" information, it needs better fact-checkers — and more people
watching over those watchmen.

When your defense against "fake news" all but kills free discussion,
your system is worse than no defense at all.

their lungs

Dr.B. testimony - Anne Marie: "The nebulizing solution was amazing..it

Anne Marie: "The nebulizing solution was amazing..it opened up my chest
and my breathing."

Meet Anne Marie, long time patient of my partner Dr Jeffrey Nusbaum.
Anne Marie experienced flu-like symptoms including sinus congestion,
chills and pain throughout her body, as well as difficulty breathing.

She received a Vitamin C IV & ozone shot at our office. She then
followed Dr Nusbaum’s protocol of immune support supplements (vitamins
A,C,D) and nebulized with our proprietary H202 solution with Lugol’s 5%
iodine. Anne Marie had great results from these natural therapies and is
doing well. This is her testimony.

Kathryn: "Right away the nebulizer started to open up my lungs."

Apr 26 2020

This is my patient, Kathryn, who was in the hospital for several weeks
due to pneumonia in both lungs. When she tested positive for COVID
during her stay, Kathryn requested to go home as there was nothing the
hospital could do aside from treat her with oxygen so she could breath.
Learn about the natural therapies Kathryn received that helped build her
immune system and helped her recover from her illness.

Please know that my colleagues and I do not claim to have a cure for any
illness. However, we do make the claim that we can give the patient a
chance to recover by supporting the ‘host’ and supporting the terrain of
the host. The human body is designed wonderfully to fight back against
illness. Kathryn’s case is a perfect example. Watch her testimony and
you be the judge.

(12) Organization Chart of Wuhan's P4 Lab; many of the researchers are
from the Thousand Talents Program

The actual leader not small potatoes like Shi Zhengli or Wang Yanyi;
Jiang Mianheng and Wang Qishan are the big bosses and key persons of
Wuhan's P4 Lab

In summary: (DT-L128 and 129)

Wuhan Institute of Virology is one huge and significant project of
state-level (or national) strategies. People from various fields
involved and the amount of investment funds are unprecedent. The actual
manipulator and leader are definitely not those small potato's like Shi
Zhengli or Wang Yanyi; The virus is never 'leaked' from the Lab. There
must be a great strategy and a shocking secret behind this.

Wang Qishan serve as Secretary of the Central Commission for Discipline
Inspection after Hu Jintao stepped down in 2013. We can say Jiang
Mianheng and Wang Qishan are absolutely the big bosses and key persons
of Wuhan's P4 Laboratory.

Based on the analysis, we can confirm that Jiang Zemin maintained an
iron grip over Chinese Academy of Sciences from 1999-2019. Does he
continue to take control the politics of China? You can do your own
analysis here. ==

(13) National Institute of Health (NIH) lifts moratorium on funding
gain-of-function research on pandemic viruses (2017)

Feds lift gain-of-function research pause, offer guidance

CIDRAPCenter for Infectious Disease Research and Policy

Lisa Schnirring | News Editor | CIDRAP News  | Dec 19, 2017

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) today lifted a 3-year moratorium
on funding gain-of-function (GOF) research on potential pandemic viruses
such as avian flu, SARS, and MERS, opening the door for certain types of
research to resume.

The action coincides with today's release of a US Department of Health
and Human Services (HHS) framework for guiding funding decisions about
proposed research involving pathogens that have enhanced potential for
creating pandemics.

Experts involved in the discussions welcomed the development, but some
said the new framework still leaves key unanswered questions, such as
how to responsibly report findings from the funded lab work in medical
journals. Meanwhile, in research labs, some scientists plan to resume
experiments and are relieved the pause has ended. Both groups are eager
to see how the new review process works in real life.

In a statement today, NIH Director Francis Collins, MD, PhD, said "We
have a responsibility to ensure that research with infectious agents is
conducted responsibly, and that we consider the potential biosafety and
biosecurity risks associated with such research." He added that he is
confident that the review process spelled out in the new framework "will
help to facilitate the safe, secure, and responsible conduct of this
type of research in a manner that maximizes the benefits to public health."

(14) Safety concerns at Fort Detrick military germ lab (Aug 2019)

Deadly Germ Research Is Shut Down at Army Lab Over Safety Concerns

Problems with disposal of dangerous materials led the government to
suspend research at the military’s leading biodefense center.

By Denise Grady

Aug. 5, 2019

Safety concerns at a prominent military germ lab have led the government
to shut down research involving dangerous microbes like the Ebola virus.

"Research is currently on hold," the United States Army Medical Research
Institute of Infectious Diseases, in Fort Detrick, Md., said in a
statement on Friday. The shutdown is likely to last months, Caree Vander
Linden, a spokeswoman, said in an interview.

The statement said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
decided to issue a "cease and desist order" last month to halt the
research at Fort Detrick because the center did not have "sufficient
systems in place to decontaminate wastewater" from its highest-security
labs.

But there has been no threat to public health, no injuries to employees
and no leaks of dangerous material outside the laboratory, Ms. Vander
Linden said.

In the statement, the C.D.C. cited "national security reasons" as the
rationale for not releasing information about its decision.

The institute is a biodefense center that studies germs and toxins that
could be used to threaten the military or public health, and also
investigates disease outbreaks. It carries out research projects for
government agencies, universities and drug companies, which pay for the
work. It has about 900 employees.

The shutdown affects a significant portion of the research normally
conducted there, Ms. Vander Linden said.

The suspended research involves certain toxins, along with germs called
select agents, which the government has determined have "the potential
to pose a severe threat to public, animal or plant health or to animal
or plant products." There are 67 select agents and toxins; examples
include the organisms that cause Ebola, smallpox, anthrax and plague,
and the poison ricin.

In theory, terrorists could use select agents as weapons, so the
government requires any organization that wants to handle them to pass a
background check, register, follow safety and security procedures, and
undergo inspections through a program run by the C.D.C. and the United
States Department of Agriculture. As of 2017, 263 laboratories —
government, academic, commercial or private — had registered with the
program.

The institute at Fort Detrick was part of the select agent program until
its registration was suspended last month, after the C.D.C. ordered it
to stop conducting the research.

The shutdown was first reported on Friday by the Frederick News-Post. [...]
