(1) Scroogle's Letter from the Rich: "instead, you blame Greens, Blacks, Jews ..."

Scroogle seems to have been formed by ex-Google workers after Google "sold out" its principles. Scroogle search screens keep taking pot shots at Google ... over everything EXCEPT being Jewish-run. In this letter of September 3, 2009, Jews are listed among Victim Groups, scapegoats used by the Rich.

A note of appreciation from the rich

Let's be honest: you'll never win the lottery.

On the other hand, the chances are pretty good that you'll slave away at some miserable job the rest of your life. That's because you were in all likelihood born into the wrong social class. Let's face it — you're a member of the working caste. Sorry!

As a result, you don't have the education, upbringing, connections, manners, appearance, and good taste to ever become one of us. In fact, you'd probably need a book the size of the yellow pages to list all the unfair advantages we have over you. That's why we're so relieved to know that you still continue to believe all those silly fairy tales about "justice" and "equal opportunity" in America.

Of course, in a hierarchical social system like ours, there's never been much room at the top to begin with. Besides, it's already occupied by us — and we like it up here so much that we intend to keep it that way. But at least there's usually someone lower in the social hierarchy you can feel superior to and kick in the teeth once in a while. Even a lowly dishwasher can easily find some poor slob further down in the pecking order to sneer and spit at. So be thankful for migrant workers, prostitutes, and homeless street people.

Always remember that if everyone like you were economically secure and socially privileged like us, there would be no one left to fill all those boring, dangerous, low-paid jobs in our economy. And no one to fight our wars for us, or blindly follow orders in our totalitarian corporate institutions. And certainly no one to meekly go to their grave without having lived a full and creative life. So please, keep up the good work!

You also probably don't have the same greedy, compulsive drive to possess wealth, power, and prestige that we have. And even though you may sincerely want to change the way you live, you're also afraid of the very change you desire, thus keeping you and others like you in a nervous state of limbo. So you go through life mechanically playing your assigned social role, terrified what others would think should you ever dare to "break out of the mold."

Naturally, we try to play you off against each other whenever it suits our purposes: high-waged workers against low-waged, unionized against non-unionized, Black against White, male against female, American workers against Japanese against Mexican against.... We continually push your wages down by invoking "foreign competition," "the law of supply and demand," "national security," or "the bloated federal deficit." We throw you on the unemployed scrap heap if you step out of line or jeopardize our profits. And to give you an occasional break from the monotony of our daily economic blackmail, we allow you to participate in our stage-managed electoral shell games, better known to you ordinary folks as "elections." Happily, you haven't a clue as to what's really happening — instead, you blame "Aliens," "Tree-hugging Environmentalists," "Niggers," "Jews," Welfare Queens," and countless others for your troubled situation.

We're also very pleased that many of you still embrace the "work ethic," even though most jobs in our economy degrade the environment, undermine your physical and emotional health, and basically suck your one and only life right out of you. We obviously don't know much about work, but we're sure glad you do!

Of course, life could be different. Society could be intelligently organized to meet the real needs of the general population. You and others like you could collectively fight to free yourselves from our domination. But you don't know that. In fact, you can't even imagine that another way of life is possible. And that's probably the greatest, most significant achievement of our system — robbing you of your imagination, your creativity, your ability to think and act for yourself.

So we'd truly like to thank you from the bottom of our heartless hearts. Your loyal sacrifice makes possible our corrupt luxury; your work makes our system work. Thanks so much for "knowing your place" — without even knowing it!

(2) Microsoft CEO Jewish too. Jewish Achievement - or Control?

The Measure of Their Achievement©

There are, perhaps, thirteen to fifteen million Jews in a world of six billion people. Jews are so few in number that in a room of 1,000 people representing the world's population, only two would be Jewish. A comparable sample from the United States would count only twenty-two Jews among 1,000 representative Americans.

In the sciences, Jews have won 22 percent of all the Nobel Prizes ever awarded - 29 percent of the prizes since 1950, after the Holocaust destroyed a third of their numbers. Given their small population, Jews should have earned only one of the 502 Nobels awarded for physics, chemistry, medicine and physiology. They have won 123.

The Fields Medal, awarded to the world's brightest mathematicians under age 40, is the honor John Nash, of the book and movie A Beautiful Mind had hoped to win. Instead, he took a Nobel Prize in economics as a consolation prize. One-fourth of the Fields Medals winners are Jews.

Encyclopedia Britannica provides its list of "Great Inventions." Of the 267 individual inventors, more than 13 were Jews, including Zoll (the defibrillator and the pacemaker), Land (instant photography), Gabor (holography), and Ginsburg (videotape). Jews are represented on the list 22 times more than one would expect based on their population.

They are disproportionately counted in most of the arts. Since their respective dates of inception, America's leading symphony orchestras have been led by Jewish conductors one-third of the time. They have created nearly two-thirds of Broadway's longest running musicals. Probably one-fourth of the greatest photographers of all time have been Jews, as have 10 percent of the world's great master architects. Of movie directors who earned Oscars, 38 percent were Jews. In broad artistic recognition, nearly 30 percent of the Kennedy Center honors and 13 percent of the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Awards have gone to them.

As "People of the Book," the sobriquet Mohammed used to describe them, it is perhaps not surprising Jews have earned 11 percent of the Nobel prizes for literature and 20 percent of the Pulitzer Prizes for nonfiction. Their outpouring of books, screenplays, and newspaper and magazine articles is prodigious.

In education, it is difficult to name an academic discipline in which they have not played a leading role. Certainly Jews have been seminal thinkers in philosophy (Spinoza, Maimonides, Marx), deconstruction (Derrida), economics (Marx, Ricardo, Friedman, Samuelson, Becker, Kuznets), physics (Einstein, Bohr, Gell-Mann, Feynman, Szilard), mathematics (Von Neumann, Mandelbrot, Fefferman, Zelmanov, Erdos), chemistry (Heeger, Kohn, Kroto, Olah), linguistics (Chomsky), paleontology (Gould), medicine (Flexner, Chain, Goldstein and Brown, Salk, Sabin, Prusiner), law (Brandeis, Cardozo, Frankfurter, Tribe, Dershowitz), anthropology (Boas), psychiatry and psychology (Freud, Adler, Erikson, Fromm, Rapaport, Maslow), sociology (McClelland, Riesman, Glazer, Lipset), and many other fields. Their research and teaching helped shape entire disciplines. They head three of the eight Ivy League schools (down from four several years ago), and Jewish students are 21 percent of all Ivy League students. Any review of the lists of faculty of most schools will evidence a disproportionate number of Jewish teachers. They are, for example, roughly 30 percent of the faculty of the Harvard, Stanford, and Yale law schools.

In politics, they are 11 percent of the United States Senate and 6 percent of the House of Representatives. They were 42 percent of the 100 largest political donors to the 2000 election cycle, and since 1917, when Judge Louis Brandeis was appointed, 17 percent of Supreme Court justices have been Jews. They now hold two of the nine positions.

As economists they are gifted. They have earned 38 percent of all Nobel Prizes for economics and 67 percent of the John Clarke Bates Medals for promising economists under age 40. They were instrumental in the creation of the Federal Reserve System and have headed it for twenty-five of the last thirty-five years.

In philanthropy, a December 2004 Business Week listing of America's fifty most generous benefactors included at least nineteen Jewish families and individuals. Their charitable donations totaled nearly $10 billion over less than five years. More than 90 percent of their donations went to secular causes in support of education, health care and medicine, arts, culture, and the humanities. It is remarkable that 38 percent of America's most philanthropic people come from a group representing only 2 percent of its population.

Much of the wealth behind that philanthropy came from success as entrepreneurs. In that role, Jews created whole new industries and hold leading positions in many other companies. Increasingly, they also occupy the corner office as CEOs of some of America's largest and most important companies. Of the 2003 CEOs of Fortune's 100 largest companies, 10 to 15 percent are Jews. Of Fortune's 2003 list of the twenty-five most powerful people in business, six (24 percent) are Jews. Of the thirty entrepreneurs included in the 2004 Fortune "America's 40 Richest Under 40," at five of the top ten are Jewish as are 23 percent of the Forbes 400.

Jews pioneered the ready-to-wear garment industry and, in 1885, owned all but seven of New York's 241 garment factories. Names like Levi Straus, Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, and Donna Karan are just a few contemporary representatives of that legacy. Of the four pioneers of prestige cosmetics - Helena Rubenstein, Elizabeth Arden, Est'e Lauder, and Charles Revson - only Elizabeth Arden was not Jewish. More than half of America's department stores were started or run by Jews including such greats as Macy's, Federated, May Company, Bloomingdale's, Filene's, Saks, Abraham & Straus, Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman, Sears, and, in London, Marks & Spencer.

In specialty retailing, major chains such as Gap Stores, Limited, Mervyn's, Barneys, Men's Warehouse, Home Depot, Ritz Camera, Bed Bath & Beyond are just a few of the Jewish creations. In television retailing, both QVC and Home Shopping were largely shaped by Jews. The world's foremost demonstration salesman, Ron Popeil, uses television to sell products he invented. In diamonds, De Beers and the Lev Leviev Group are the dominant forces in the worldwide diamond trade, while Zales, Helzbergs, Whitehall, and Friedman's are among the leading diamond and jewelry retailers.

We drink our Starbucks coffee and have sipped Seagrams wines and distilled spirits. The Dove Bar, H'agen-Dazs, Ben & Jerry's and Baskin-Robbins ice cream lead to our later signing up for Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, and Nutri-System programs or buying Slim-Fast in the supermarket. All these companies were founded by Jewish entrepreneurs.

We may lounge in our Fairmont, Loews, Hyatt, Helmsley or Wynn hotel, or cruise on any of the seventy-three ships of Carnival or twenty-eight of Royal Caribbean. These companies were founded or largely shaped by Jews.

Every major Hollywood studio except United Artists was created by Jews, as were NBC and CBS. Of the three original television networks, only ABC was not started by a Jew, but Leonard Goldenson bought it seven years after its founding and ran it for forty-five years. Viacom and Comcast were largely created by two Jewish families, while Steve Ross and Gerald Levin played critical roles at Time Warner.

In publishing, America's newspaper of record is The New York Times, and in the nation's capital, Katherine Meyer Graham's son, Donald, now runs The Washington Post. The Pulitzer Prize is the legacy of the family that still runs the St. Louis Post Dispatch and Arizona Daily Star. Reuters, Newhouse, Triangle and Ziff Davis are just a few of our leading magazine publishers. Random House, Alfred A. Knopf, Simon & Schuster, and Farrar, Straus and Giroux are but four of the major book publishers created and run by Jews. In finance, the story is much the same. Premier names like Goldman Sachs, Lehman Brothers, Bear Stearns, Salomon Brothers, Lazard Freres, and Wasserstein Perella are just a few of the contemporary names of a legacy dating back to the Rothschilds, Warburgs, Kuhn-Loebs, and Seligmans. In private equity, names like Kohlberg Kravis Roberts, Thomas H. Lee Partners, Blackstone Group, Hellman & Friedman, Quantum Fund, Steinhardt Partners, Claxton, Arthur Rock, Alan Patricof, Gene Kleiner, and Ben Rosen are today's legends taking the place of Bernard Baruch and Henry Morgenthau Jr. Of the twenty-six individuals named to the Private Equity Hall of Fame, at least eight (31 percent), and perhaps as many as eleven, are Jewish.

Jews were generally not allowed to own real estate outside the ghetto for the better part of 1,800 years. They have compensated by becoming a major force in development and management of property all over the world. Of the five largest Real Estate Investment Trusts listed by Forbes magazine in May 2002, four were headed by Jews.

Today, Michael Bloomberg is New York's mayor, but earlier, he created Bloomberg LP, the enterprise that gave him the wherewithal to take on a second career. It is the largest financial information company in the world.

Few people know that the shell of Shell Oil traces back to a London curio shop where the Samuels family featured seashells before two sons started trading kerosene. Nor would they know that the Amoco part of BP Amoco was the creation of the father and son team of Louis and Jacob Blaustein, who also invented the railroad tank car. Amerada Hess, Aurora Oil, Marvin Davis, Occidental Petroleum, and Kaiser-Francis are just a few more of the petroleum businesses started or principally shaped by Jews.

America's great legacy of the Guggenheim Museums and Smithsonian's Hirschorn Museum and Sculpture Garden have their origins in the success of two great mining operations established by Jewish families.

In business services, Manpower is the world's largest temporary staffing company, just as ADP is the largest payroll processing company and H & R Block is the largest preparer of tax returns. All were started by Jews.

And lest anyone think Jews are not on the leading end of new technology, Jews:

    * Created the world's largest and most valuable computer company (Dell, Michael Dell).
    * Co-founded the world's most successful search engine (Google, Sergey Brin).
    * Head the world's largest software company (Microsoft, Steve Ballmer)
    * Co-founded and head the world's second largest software company (Oracle, Lawrence Ellison).
    * Co-founded, led and serve as chairman of the world's dominant microprocessor and memory chip company (Intel, Andrew Grove).
    * Served as CEO or COO at three of the world's four most valuable Internet companies (Yahoo, Terry Semel; eBay, Jeff Skoll; and IAC, Barry Diller).
    * Co-founded and head the communications protocol/chip company whose chips are in most U.S. cell phones and are slated to be utilized in the next generation of cell phones to be used worldwide (Qualcomm, Irwin Jacobs).

And this does not consider Jews vital role as labor leaders and advocates for the poor and the oppressed. While Jews were busy creating the garment industry, their fellow Jews, Bessie Abramowitz, Sidney Hillman, David Dubinsky, and others, were organizing that industry's labor force. In that same era, Samuel Gompers headed organized labor for much of the early twentieth century. Later, Saul Alinsky, Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, Betty Friedan, and Gloria Steinem were just a few of the Jews devoted to social change.

While there are not many prominent Jewish athletes in today's professional sports, most would be surprised to know they are two of the ten top NBA coaches of all time. Five of the 216 members in the NFL Hall of Fame are Jewish, and Jews own 25 percent of the NFL football teams and 28 percent of the NBA teams. Meanwhile, Jews serve as commissioners of all five major professional sports: baseball, football, basketball, hockey, and soccer. And, where the games have more to do with brains than brawn, Jews have held the world chess championship title for roughly two-thirds of the time since it began in 1834, and in bridge, the legend of the game, Charles Goren, was Jewish.

Charles Murray's book, Human Accomplishment, looks at those who achieved excellence in the arts and sciences from 800 BC to 1950. He devotes part of that book to what he calls the "astounding" disproportionate representation of Jews among history's great figures. Following "the Jewish Emancipation" (which he dates from 1790 to 1870), he measures the representation of Jews among the 1,277 great historical figures between 1870 and 1950. Based on their percentage of the population, he says 28 should have been Jews. "The actual number was at least 158." His observation is corroborated in other listings of "history's greats." Michael Hart's book, The 100 ' A Ranking of the Most Influential Persons in History, counts eight Jews among the 100 (Jesus, St. Paul, Einstein, Marx, Moses, Freud, Pincus, and Bohr). This is 35 times what one would expect.

Bill Gates to receive Einstein award from American Friends of the Hebrew University

What do you give the man who has everything? A link with the immortal.

{implying that Einstein has been deified ... apotheosized; that's why he's beyond criticism}

American Friends of The Hebrew University announced today that Microsoft founder and chairman Bill Gates will be honored with the first Einstein Award in recognition of his philanthropic endeavors and impact on the world through Microsoft.

According to organizers, the award marks the first time that Gates has accepted any award from a Jewish/Israel-related organization. It is among the first philanthropic announcements from his foundation since Gates ceased day-to-day responsibilities at Microsoft on June 27 in order to dedicate himself full-time to duties at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

{"first time ... award": this implies that Gates is not Jewish himself}

Gates will be honored at a gala dinner to be held in New York in December 2008. Proceeds from the dinner will help to fund plant and animal science research at The Hebrew University's Robert H. Smith Faculty of Agricultural, Food and Environmental Quality Sciences in Israel. The Faculty, which is the first and only degree-granting academic institution of its kind in Israel, has become a world leader in the development of innovations such as drip irrigation, soil solarization, aquaculture, functional foods and new techniques for wastewater reclamation.

"The Einstein Award represents the creation of a continuum of great minds and was inspired by the legacy of Albert Einstein, a founding father of our university who wrought a profound revolution in human understanding of our world," said Hebrew University President, Professor Menachem Magidor in a press release. "The award pays tribute to today's most original, creative and effective thinkers. Bill Gates is a most worthy recipient -- like Einstein, he is a leader whose actions stem from the knowledge that human progress includes alleviating human suffering."

More from the press release:

"As the founder, chief software architect and chairman of Microsoft, Gates led the company to become the worldwide leader in business and personal software, services, and solutions. He began his major philanthropic efforts in 1994 when he created the William H. Gates Foundation, which focused on global health. Three years later, he and Melinda Gates created the Gates Library Foundation, which worked to bring public access computers with Internet connections to libraries in the United States. The two groups merged in 2000 to form the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation."

"Today, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is organized into three programs -- Global Development, Global Health, and United States. In developing countries, it focuses on improving people's health and giving them the chance to lift themselves out of hunger and extreme poverty. In the United States, it seeks to ensure that all people -- especially those with the fewest resources -- have access to the opportunities they need to succeed in school and life. The foundation supports grantees in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Internationally, it supports work in more than 100 countries."

"Stated AFHU President George A. Schieren: 'We are truly privileged to be honoring Bill Gates, who in addition to his revolutionary approach to information technology, is making a profound difference in the lives of millions worldwide confronting hunger, resource scarcity and health threats -- all of which Israel faced and has successfully overcome since 1942, when The Robert H. Smith Faculty of Agricultural, Food and Environmental Quality Sciences was established.'"

"The Hebrew University's Robert H. Smith Faculty is currently rolling out its "Feeding the World through Sustainable Agriculture" campaign. Departments are being organized to form a pioneering interdisciplinary four-Institute model. Physical campus improvements and program innovations will enable scientists to accelerate their work in addressing world hunger, malnutrition and environmental threats, particularly as affects people in developing nations and semi-arid climates. In addition to educating Israel's students, the Faculty's Division of External Studies educates international students from more than 150 countries."

New ad campaign targets Jews 'abducted' by intermarriage

By Dana Weiler-Polak, Haaretz Correspondent , Sep. 2, 2009

http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/1111929.html

The Prime Minister's Office and the Jewish Agency unveiled an aggressive advertisement campaign for the Masa project which is designed to strengthen Jewish identity among youths in the Diaspora and their bonds to Israel.

One video clip likens Jews who marry outside of the religion to missing persons, with fake notices and pictures which drive home the point.

As part of the campaign, similar "missing person" notices will be plastered on walls around the country.

Masa hopes the campaign will spur the public to commit to the cause of preventing marriage to non-Jews, which Jewish Agency officials believe is tantamount to a "strategic national threat."

According to figures compiled by the Jewish People Policy Planning Institute, over 50 percent of Jews in the Diaspora marry a non-Jewish partner.

Studies show that Jews who participate in extensive programs in Israel deepen their Jewish identity and strengthen their bond to the country. Most of them marry Jews and send their children to Jewish schools and become politically and socially active on behalf of Israel-related causes. Some of them even immigrate to Israel.

The head of the campaign, Motti Scharf, compared assimilation to the critical water shortage. "Even though this is an existential problem, the public in Israel is displaying apathy towards it because the process is slow and not dramatic, out of sight," he said. "The time has come to put the issue on the table."

Tribunal declares Internet hate speech law unconstitutional

By John Ward

Canadian Press September 2, 2009

OTTAWA — A ruling from a Canadian Human Rights Tribunal member says a controversial law banning Internet hate messages is unconstitutional because it violates free speech protections.

Athanasios Hadjis ruled Wednesday that section 13 of the Canadian Human Rights Act violates Charter protections.

While this decision doesn't throw out the law - that's something for the courts - it did let accused hatemonger Marc Lemire off the hook, because Hadjis refused to penalize him or order him to stop posting his messages.

If the example is followed by other tribunal members, it could mean an end to section 13 cases.

The section originated in the 1960s as a tool against racist phone hotlines and was later extended to the Internet. It's come under harsh criticism recently.

Conservative pundit Ezra Levant, who has written a book on what he calls "abusive" human-rights bodies, expressed wonder at the decision.

"This is the first time in 32 years that anyone has been acquitted under the censorship provisions of the Canadian Human Rights Act," he said. "That's amazing - and to have the law declared unconstitutional is even more of a breakthrough."

Hate accusations are filed with the Canadian Human Rights Commission. If it finds them valid, they are then taken before the tribunal, which can order people to stop posting material on the web or impose fines of up to $10,000.

Lemire was accused of posting anti-Semitic and anti-gay material on web sites in a complaint brought by Ottawa lawyer Richard Warman. Warman has become an Internet watchdog for such material and the main section 13 complainant before the tribunal.

He had asked for a cease-and-desist order against Lemire and a $7,500 fine.

Hadjis thought otherwise.

He found that Lemire violated section 13 in at least one instance involving an anti-gay message. However, he declined to impose any penalty because he found the sections at issue unconstitutional.

"The restriction imposed by these provisions is not a reasonable limit within the meaning of section 1 of the Charter," Hadjis wrote. "Since a formal declaration of invalidity is not a remedy available to the tribunal, I will simply refuse to apply these provisions for the purposes of the complaint against Mr. Lemire and I will not issue any remedial order against him."

The Canadian Jewish Congress was quick to call for an appeal of the Hadjis ruling.

"We strongly disagree with his decision not to impose a cease-and-desist order," said Joel Richler, an honorary legal counsel to the congress.

The congress said other tribunal members have found the section to be constitutional and the courts should be asked to clarify the matter.

The section has been controversial, with some claiming it spreads too wide a net. The Supreme Court of Canada has said legal action should be reserved only for the most extreme forms of hate.

Levant said the ruling showed that the rights commission went after speech that was political, not hateful.

"The CHRC prosecuted Marc Lemire for criticizing welfare rates and high immigration - in a manner the tribunal acknowledges were not hateful.

"So you've got an increasingly aggressive government agency, with new powers to issue massive fines, and it's being used as a political weapon. Of course it was struck down as unconstitutional."

The commission has itself backed away from section 13 and its penalties.

It came under fire earlier this year after several controversial cases arose, including one in which a Mark Steyn book excerpt on a Macleans Magazine web site was accused of promoting hatred and contempt of Muslims.

That case was tossed out, but it led some to demand that the commission be disbanded

In a special report issued in June, the commission asked Parliament to change the law to eliminate the fines and provide a clear, legal definition of what constitutes prohibited hatred.

Jeers and loathing at tribunal

Critics in gallery challenge human rights bureacracy

BY JOSEPH BREAN, NATIONAL POST SEPTEMBER 15, 2008

OTTAWA - For people who consider the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal a kangaroo court, the supporters of Marc Lemire in his defence against a hate-speech charge were surprisingly respectful of protocol yesterday, as they packed a gallery to see the landmark cross-examination of the investigator behind the case.

Mindful of the police presence, everyone rose when directed and no one heckled, although old men muttered their dissent. A thick-necked young Lemire associate with a buzz-cut kept cracking his neck and gnawing the chapped skin on his thumb, but was otherwise quiet and still as he doodled and took notes. Even the old guy with the knife in his pocket smiled as he removed it for the Tribunal guards at the hearing room door.

All in all, the monitor from the Canadian Jewish Congress had plenty to monitor, from Canada's most famous online racists and the legal team that defended Holocaust-denier Ernst Zundel, down to the conservative Maclean's columnist Mark Steyn, dapper with a red pocket puff, who at the breaks signed autographs for admirers.

It seemed a recipe for disaster, but the awkward highlight of the day came not from Mr. Lemire's defence team, nor the prosecution team of the Canadian Human Rights Commission, nor even the complainant, Richard Warman, a human rights activist who has rarely attended his own case, and did not yesterday as it concluded.

Rather, it came when the Tribunal appeared to wrongly out an innocent person as a Commission operative, thus exposing her to the unwanted attention of the vast army of bloggers who support Mr. Lemire, owner of the far-right FreedomSite.

For a government agency that has fought for months to protect the personal security of their own staff, even going so far as to (unsuccessfully) invoke national security to keep them off the witness stand, their handling of the "Nellie Hechme" question is remarkable.

Legally, however, the most significant part of the day was the admission by CHRC investigator Dean Steacy that his colleagues share control of an online identity called Jadewarr, which they have used to anonymously monitor and contribute to controversial far-right and white supremacist websites. Mr. Steacy's examination on this point by Mr. Lemire's lawyer Barbara Kulaszka bolstered their case that he should not be held accountable for what others post on his site, especially if those others might be government employees.

There was little mention of Mr. Lemire's constitutional challenge of the part of the human rights act under which he is charged, section 13.1, which says it is a violation to disseminate material on the Internet that is "likely to expose a person or persons to hatred or contempt."

That challenge explains Mr. Steyn's presence, because Maclean's is also accused of a section 13.1 violation, based largely on a Steyn book excerpt about Muslim demographics, which was brought by Mohamed Elmasry, the head of the Canadian Islamic Congress, and others.

Ezra Levant, the other high-profile section 13.1 defendant (he published the Danish Muhammad cartoons in his now-defunct Western Standard magazine) did not attend, but he had the luxury of reading live Internet coverage of the hearing by Mr. Steyn's colleague Kady O'Malley, and Mr. Lemire himself, who blogged from his chair closest to the witness stand.

There were moments of drama, such as when Mr. Steacy bluntly and repeatedly refused to answer a question (he was asked for the identity of an anonymous complainant, who never filed a formal complaint), to the evident disbelief of Athanasios Hadjis, the one-man tribunal hearing the case.

"You refuse to answer?" he said twice.

There were raised voices, most notably that of Doug Christie--best known as Ernst Zundel's lawyer and now an intervenor on behalf of Mr. Lemire -- who yelled at Mr. Hadjis that he had flown all the way from Victoria, B.C., on his own tab, and he was not going to let the Commission lawyer continue her "obstruction" of his cross-examination.

There were revelations about the informal relationships between Commission investigators and police forces and the Canadian Security Intelligence Service. Mr. Steacy, among the Commission's main 13.1 investigators, said he has asked for and received information from law enforcement "maybe a dozen times," and twice provided information to them.

But, for skeptics of human rights commissions, the coup de grace came first thing in the morning, when Alain Monfette, director of the law enforcement support team for Bell Canada, took the witness stand.

He had been subpoenaed to explain who logged on to the Web site freedominion.ca as Jadewarr in December, 2006, just as bloggers were using technical data to reveal it as Mr. Steacy's online identity.

Later in the day, Mr. Steacy testified that the name Jadewarr "is actually a short for for Jade Warrior, which is a character from a novel I read as a teenager." He said access to the account was shared by at least five people, including investigators, their superiors and Mr. Steacy's personal assistants (he has been blind since 2004). He said there was no managerial oversight of what investigators did under this identity, although he said "the manager would be aware of what was going on."

Once Mr. Hadjis explicitly ordered him to do so, Mr. Monfette reported that Bell's technical staff learned that whoever logged on as Jadewarr that day in 2006 had accessed the Internet through a Bell account controlled by Nellie Hechme. He gave the phone number and the street address of the apartment where the account was registered.

By the morning coffee break, associates of Mr. Lemire had already tracked down the value of Ms. Hechme's apartment, but not her identity. And by the end of the day, the Commission's lawyer Margot Blight said that Ms. Hechme remains a mystery to everyone involved, including Mr. Lemire's team.

Reached by phone last night, Ms. Hechme, 26, told the National Post she has no connection to the tribunal, has never known any of the investigators, and has never accessed a Web site as Jadewarr. She said that in the relevant period in 2006 she did have a Bell Sympatico account with a wireless connection that was not password controlled, meaning anyone within range of her apartment could have accessed the Internet with it.

She does, however, have a link to Bell Canada. She has been employed there, though not in the Internet division, since before 2006. She had never heard of this Jadewarr issue before, and was disturbed that her name had been publicly disclosed, by her employer no less, without so much as a heads-up.

Even before the lunchbreak yesterday, her identity was the subject of feverish speculation on Web sites supportive of Mr. Lemire, which also posted her address. By the late afternoon, someone had dug up her old MySpace page, in a mass online investigation that no doubt continued into the wee hours of this morning.

It was just the most prominent of awkward moments for an unusually long and complicated tribunal hearing whose ending, to judge by the tone of the discussion in the late afternoon, has come as a blessed relief to all involved.

Notably, however, we all await the decision.
