Pieczenik was Deputy Assistant Secretary of State under Henry
Kissinger, Cyrus Vance and James Baker.[2] His expertise includes
foreign policy, international crisis management and psychological
warfare.[6] He served the presidential administrations of Gerald Ford,
Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush in the capacity of
deputy assistant secretary.[7]

consultant to help in the restructuring of its Office for the

In 1976, Pieczenik was made Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for

At the Department of State, he served as a "specialist on hostage
taking".[10] He has been credited with devising successful negotiating
strategies and tactics used in several high-profile hostage
situations, including the 1976 TWA Flight 355 hostage situation and
the 1977 kidnapping of the son of Cyprus' president.[1]

As a renowned psychiatrist, he was utilized as a press source for
early information on the mental state of the hostages involved in the
Iran hostage crisis after they were freed.[11] In 1977, Pulitzer
Prize–winning journalist Mary McGrory described Stephen Pieczenik as
"one of the most 'brilliantly competent' men in the field of
terrorism".[12] He worked "side by side" with Police Chief Maurice J.
Cullinane in the Washington, D.C. command center of Mayor Walter
Washington during the 1977 Hanafi Siege.[13]

In 1978, Pieczenik was known as "a psychiatrist and political
scientist in the U.S. Department of State whose credentials and
experiences are probably unique among officials handling terrorist
situations".[1]

In 1978 Pieczenik was a special envoy for President Jimmy Carter to
Italy to assist in the search for Italy's Prime Minister Aldo Moro.
Pieczenik, as an international crisis manager and hostage negotiator
in the State Department, was send to Italy on March 16, 1978, the day
that Moro was kidnapped, and was involved in the negotiations for the

the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR).[24] According to Internet
Archive, his name was removed from the CFR roster sometime between
October 6 and November 18, 2012.[25] Publicly, Pieczenik no longer

It is possible that Epstein is just an ordinary paedophile, a slave to
his own sick depravity. But this now seems unlikely, it leaves too many
questions unresolved: why did Epstein build a sex trafficking network?
Why did he seek the company of the world’s most influential characters?
Why did he schlep all those royals, once and future presidents, Harvard
professors and movie stars around the world in his ‘Lolita Express’? And
then we get to the big question: how did he get away with it all? Back
in 2007, registered sex offender Epstein was supposed to spend the rest
of his life behind bars. Instead he spent a mere thirteen months in a
VIP prison.

The Daily Beast reported yesterday that when Alexander Acosta, the
former U.S. attorney in Miami who infamously cut Epstein a
non-prosecution plea deal back in 2007, was being interviewed for the
job of US labor secretary by the Trump administration’s transition team,
Acosta’s conduct in the Epstein affair came under scrutiny. In that
interview Acosta allegedly said, "I was told Epstein ‘belonged to
intelligence’ and to leave it alone."

The more we look into this registered sex offender’s saga, the more it
appears to have the characteristics of a gargantuan espionage operation.
If so, then Epstein was running a multi-million intelligence apparatus
set to accumulate dirt on some of the world’s most influential people.
The walls of his Caribbean island palace were rigged with cameras, and
likely for reasons other than his personal libidinal gratification.
Epstein didn’t work alone. Press reports allege that Ghislaine Maxwell
functioned as Epstein’s ‘madam.’

Multiple court filings reviewed and reported on by the Miami Herald
reveal that lawyers for one of Epstein’s alleged victims claim that
Maxwell helped traffic girls and women to powerful figures. The same
documents report that the alleged victims were lured into the sex ring
by offers of modelling, fashion, and educational opportunities.

Ghislaine is the youngest child of the flamboyant Jewish media tycoon
Robert Maxwell, who died under mysterious circumstances in November
1991. Shortly before he died, a self-proclaimed former Mossad officer
named Ari Ben-Menashe had approached a number of news organisations in
Britain and the United States with the allegation that Maxwell was a
long-time agent for the Israeli intelligence service.

I cannot verify whether Robert Maxwell was a Mossad agent or if
association with the Mossad is an hereditary trait, but the possible
conjecture that Epstein and Maxwell were running an intelligence
operation makes sense of the questions surrounding this gruesome spectacle.

This intelligence postulate raises a crucial question. If Epstein was a
spy, who did he work for? Was it the Russians? I only ask because every
time Tel Aviv comes up as a likely suspect American media tends to blame
the Russians. Maybe Epstein was working for the Iranians, all
indications are that the Trump’s administration is desperate for a
pretext for a war with Iran. Another possibly is that this affair is a
classic MI6 operation and Epstein is actually the paedophile model of
007. If the espionage conspiracy theory is correct, then the Mossad and
the CIA would be the natural suspects. Yet it is difficult to believe
that the Mossad acting by itself was powerful enough to procure for
Epstein his remarkably lenient plea deal. It is almost impossible to
imagine that Acosta, acting as the federal prosecutor, would take
instructions from Israel. If it was the Mossad, they likely enjoyed
significant support from within the American intelligence community. I
assume that Alan Dershowitz, Epstein’s former attorney, may be able to
answer some of these questions. He seems to know the details:

Clare Bronfman said she was "truly remorseful" for her role
US heiress Clare Bronfman has pleaded guilty to her role in an alleged
sex trafficking operation.

Bronfman, the 40-year-old heir to the Seagram alcohol fortune, was
accused of using more than $100m (£77m) to fund the suspected sex cult
Nxivm.

She pleaded guilty on two counts - conspiracy to conceal and harbour
illegal immigrants for financial gain, and fraudulent use of
identification.

She told the court in Brooklyn that she was "truly remorseful".

"I wanted to do good in the world and help people," she added.
"However, I have made mistakes."

Six people in total have been accused of being involved with Nxivm,
pronounced nexium.

Bronfman is the fifth to plead guilty, with just one defendant - the
suspected cult leader Keith Raniere - due to go on trial next month.

Bronfman will be sentenced on 25 July. She could face up to 25 years
in prison, although sentencing guidelines suggest it could be up to
only 27 months.

What is Nxivm?

Nxivm is a group that started in 1998 as a self-help programme and
says it has worked with more than 16,000 people, including Smallville
actress Allison Mack, who pleaded guilty earlier this month.

On its website, Nxivm describes itself as a "community guided by
humanitarian principles that seek to empower people and answer
important questions about what it means to be human".

Despite its tagline of "working to build a better world", its leader,
Mr Raniere, stands accused of overseeing a "slave and master" system
within the group. ...

Bronfman, a philanthropist and former showjumper, is the daughter of
the late Canadian businessman Edgar Bronfman, whose net worth was
estimated to be about $2.6bn (£2bn).

Bronfman was on Nxivm's executive board.

The millions of dollars she was accused of giving to the group were
thought to have been used to pay for fake identities and court summons
against perceived enemies.

Female recruits were also allegedly branded with Mr Raniere's initials
and expected to have sex with him, as part of the system.

Appearing at a court in Brooklyn, Bronfman admitted knowingly
harbouring a woman brought to the US on a fake work visa in order to
exploit her for labour.

As part of her plea, she agreed to forfeit $6m (£4.6m) and not to
appeal any prison sentence of 27 months or less.

Mr Raniere, 58, was arrested in Mexico last year on sex trafficking
charges, and is being held without bail.

He has pleaded not guilty to charges against him.

His defence team has argued that the alleged sexual relationships with
women were consensual, and says he has denied child abuse charges
against him.

The women were looking for self-fulfillment and joined a group called
Nxivm, prosecutors said. Then they were branded with a man’s initials
and forced to hand over nude photos of themselves. Some were coerced
into having sex with him.

The man, Keith Raniere, was the leader of what prosecutors have called
a "sex cult" based near Albany. They also say Nxivm was a criminal
enterprise.

Mr. Raniere’s trial began yesterday in Brooklyn. Here’s what you need to
know.

What was Nxivm?

Nxivm (pronounced Nex-e-um) was founded in the 1990s and billed itself
as a self-help group. About 16,000 people took Nxivm courses, which
cost thousands of dollars apiece.

The cultlike group attracted high-profile supporters including Clare
Bronfman, the heiress to the Seagram liquor fortune, and Allison Mack,
the actress known for her role in the television series "Smallville."

Some women were invited to become part of a secret society within
Nxivm, known as D.O.S.

What is Keith Raniere accused of?

He faces federal racketeering and sex-trafficking charges.

During the opening statements at his trial, prosecutors said that the
women in the D.O.S. society were called "slaves," and that Mr. Raniere
and others pressured them into handing over deeds to their homes, bank
account information and their "deepest, darkest secrets."

With that leverage, prosecutors said, Mr. Raniere then coerced women
into sex and enriched himself. One of his victims, they said, was a
